If you traverse the countryside and Itoshima Peninsula west of Fukuoka city, you'll find Nagatare Beach, just a few minutes' walk north of Imajuku Station. This long stretch of sand is in a residential area, but at one end there is a small pine forest and an open area called Nagatare Seaside Park for playing and picnicking. In the middle of the Crescent, easy to find and with great views of the bay and Noko Island lies Mediumtempo with a number of attached shops, Kaoi surf bar, Imajuku bike rental and Hippo Bakery.
“Not too fast, not too slow” is their motto. Located on the second floor of the building, Mediumtempo features an entire wall of windows overlooking the beach and calm waters of Imazu Bay. The elegant interior invites you with natural light and bulbs that cast a soft glow on the handcrafted woodwork. In winter, a wood stove warms the café.
The decor is simple: green plants, unique art, and an area of an uncluttered design studio for T-shirts and stickers right by the cafe. When you look at plants, you may notice that you are interested in houseplants in addition to standard potted plants. Lots of cute little herbs grow in clean water and without soil. If you order multiple items, you can even sample them. The shirt is high quality and well designed. They can be purchased online on their website. The label will be placed near the registration area.
The menu includes light café dishes. With “Hot Sand” you get a grilled sandwich in a hot pocket with a few toppings of your choice. The message is not about the beach; Actually I assume they are not English but Japanese Romajior English letter, and is commonly understood as a sandwich in Japan. Currently ham and cheese, sauce and cheese, Oyakodon (fried chicken and eggs in a bowl of rice – except here) and sweet banana caramel cheese are all hot pocket options. They also have special offers. For drinks, there is a full bar offering Japanese desserts as well as coffee and soft drinks.
The service is friendly and intelligent and is led by Akemi Izumi. She worked with her husband, design expert Showichi Yoshida, to turn it into a family-run cafe. Say hello, grab a cool refreshing drink, sit back and find yourself in a relaxed state – but not too lazy.
