Mitsuhama Fireworks Festival 2025 – August events in Ehime

Local fireworks events take place throughout rural Japan during the summer months. Organized in spectacular fashion by Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs and Chambers of Commerce, they are a source of pride for the local population and attract hundreds to thousands of spectators.

The Mitsuhama Fireworks Festival is typical of this series of events. Takes place on the first Sunday in August. The Mitsu area, also called Mitsuhama, is an old port of Matsuyama. Fireworks are set off from the long piers jutting out into the harbor and festival-goers gather on the wharf. It's a very large, flat area that can accommodate a lot of people, which is good because a lot of people come. The area near the fish market is cordoned off for those who wish to purchase seats and use toilets and handwashing facilities. On the contrary, entry is free here and you can sit anywhere along the way past the pier.

This event features a series of blowing, squeezing, exploding and smashing shapes with stars, planets, flowers, hearts, smiling faces and other wonderful shapes in a short period of time. The largest fireworks display is so loud that your chest pounds and fills your entire field of vision.

In addition to fireworks, there is also a lot of activity at the stands along the streets and harbors. They sell a range of wonderful, often unhealthy but filling snacks, all sorts of cold drinks and toys that flash and whir. The stalls look fun and lit from the inside and attract the crowd. The crowd itself is a beautiful sight. The people of Ehime like to wear traditional clothing during festivals. The women appeared in light-colored outfits and wore floral yukata belts under the bust, while the men wore darker belts low over the hips. There are many pairs of wooden sandals. It should be noted that children under two years old do not like fireworks and therefore it is better not to take them with you.

If possible, try to travel by train or bicycle so you can enjoy a cold beer and avoid the traffic jams that arise almost as soon as the gunpowder smoke clears. The nearest train station is Mitsu on the Iyotetsu Line, while Mitsuhama on the JR Line is within walking distance. There are many events taking place in Mitsuhama throughout the day, so you can attend the event in the afternoon and evening.
