Bessho Hot Spring – Nagano – Japan Travel

Although Bessho Onsen is an ancient dry hot spring town with a long history, it is a very small town and extremely quiet. (Not to be confused with Beppu Onsen in Kyushu, the hot water country in Japan). If you visit Bessho on a weekday, when there are no special events going on, you can come here with someone else.

Please get ready to live again

Departing from Ueda station on the Hokuriku bullet train line, take the Ueda Electric train to Bessho Onsen. The 30-minute journey will include several stops and buildings will increasingly appear in the view outside the window. You will share a bench with about 7 fellow Silence companions. The train's terminus (your destination) is an empty station. This thing looks like something straight out of a classic Ghibli animated movie Soul goes.

This is a great place for those who have been diagnosed with TTSD (Tokyo Traumatic Stress Disorder) or think they have TTSD.

Don't call a taxi

From the station, just walking is enough. Let's slow down. Like I said from the beginning, this is a pretty small town. My answer is people who want to explore or move quickly to transform. Oh, what's wrong? There are many more excellent things. Try soaking in the public baths (150 yen), or check out some of the ryokan (in case you want to stay longer), and there are plenty of historical places to visit. Here, just relax. No car noise; If there is no instrument, it is pure. Let's relax!

Historical landmark

The hot springs have been exploited for centuries since the warrior Yoshinaka Minamoto rushed into Shinano to rally his strength against the Taira and burned the original Bessho shrines in 1180. , the town's namesake (name old) also entered poetry through the famous work The Pillow Book (circa 1010) by poet Sei Shonagon.

Water flow at any time

In fact, Bessho is said to be one of Japan's oldest hot springs in general and Nagano's oldest in particular. What is known dates back at least to the time nearby Zenkoji was built (around 625). It was rebuilt in 1252 after being destroyed by the Yoshinaka cyclone and became popular (with many women) for centuries afterward. Hot water at Con Dao is said to have the effect of making the skin lighter and lighter. After soaking in a public bath – and an ungraded one – my skin health improved a lot!

The main point of the absorption tube

The “North-Facing Kannon” temple at Bessho is a lost cause, because in Japan, people rarely build gods facing north. It is said that praying at this angel throne will remove dark things from your life. In addition, far up in the valley, near the horizon, is a mountain range covered in snow in winter. There is Zenkou-ji temple, “Southern Kannon”, located along the Chikuma river. If you really want to deflate the devil, you must pray before the gods in both angels.

Few amenities

There are only a few places to eat and drink in Bessho, and those eateries serve the purpose of serving locals rather than tourists. The favorite dish here is buckwheat noodles. The cost is also not too high. People here are very polite, but they are just rustic locals. There is only one tourist center, and one/two souvenir shops on the way back to the station.

Traveling during the day is comfortable, but staying would be better

This is an easily missed spot in Nagano, with a colorful history and countless places to explore. You can visit nearby Unnojuku after arriving at Bessho, if you want to soak in some old architecture, and still return to Tokyo in time for dinner. Zenkou-ji isn't too far for a quick visit (and a second prayer!). It's better to stay overnight and indulge yourself in a hot bath at one of the quaint Bessho inns.

And the Tokyo TTSD traumatic stress disorder syndrome will disappear immediately.

Go there

It takes 90-100 minutes from Tokyo to Ueda on the Asama Shinkansen (bullet train), then about 30 minutes from Ueda to Bessho Onsen station.
