Yunohama Beach in Tsuruoka – Yamagata

While Yamagata Prefecture is famous for its skiing, its mountains are not known for their outdoor fun. In July and August, the sandy beaches in this province become a surprise to tourists.

Located at the border of Tsuruoka City, the Sea of Japan (Sea of Japan), Yunohama is the most famous sea in Yamagata Prefecture. Every year, in the summer, waves of people flock to this place, even if only during the swimming season, since Sea Day (Sea Day is celebrated on the 3rd day of July). Nearly 1km of beach contains quite a lot of dense sand because the number of people walking on the beach is limited to the area near the beach lover's place.

Even if Yunohama doesn't seem too different from other shores – the weekend crowds (including quite a few children), many come here to swim and surf (in fact, Yunohama is a one of the oldest surf zones in Japan), and other athletes play soccer and bubbles – it offers beachgoers the advantage of not having to travel through the sand to compensate for the lost calories. The relaxing dishes here are, among other things, fish, takoyaki (pancakes), chips, sports drinks and sodas are all sold on the house.

If you're looking for something more than sunshine – or sun protection at a trap (a common sight in Yunohama) – there's more to do here. It's famous for fishing, and a bike ride from the shore will take you to Kamo Marine Park. If dolphins don't excite you, perhaps hot water will. In fact, Yunohama is most famous for its hot springs, with many signs in downtown Tsuruoka directing motorists to the famous hot spring resort.

However, you can come to hot water – hot springs at any time of the year. Try to take advantage of the summer period to come here, when you can take advantage of Yunohama in some way.

Some practical information

  • There is no charge to enter the beach at Yunohama, but it will cost visitors 800 yen to park nearby.
  • There are quite a few places to stay in Yunohama (including places with no sand in sight) that are close to the ocean. Information about hotels and ryokan (traditional Japanese inns) can all be found on the official website of the Yunohama Hot Springs Tourism Association (Yunohama Hot Springs Tourism Association).
